Subject: [*] Card Shell Volume 1 v1.01
Moderators,
Here is yet another(last for a while I hope) update
of the cardshell games vol #1. I was alerted to a case where they
will crash during startup on an accelerated 68000 machine
without colour quickdraw. The games are meant to just quit gracefully
on any machine without colour QD. This has been fixed. Otherwise
the games are unchanged and people with working copies of the
previous versions do not really need to down load these ones.
Although if they are going to spread the games further, then
it would be a good idea to use these fixed games.
Cheers
Ralph
ABOUT THE CARD SHELL GAMES VOLUME #1. v1.0.1
Code and Artwork (c)1992 Ralph S Sutherland.
Portions of code remain (c) Symantec Corp.
Welcome to the first of a series of solitaire card game releases. Volume
#1 is the first four games to be developed with a new card game framework
called the Card Shell. They all use full colour graphics including 40
pack designs and 60 background patterns.
This second 1993 release fixes a few more minor bugs.
Features include:
*They will (should?) work on all Apple screens at any colour depth.
The games require a mac with colour quickdraw capabilities (see below).
*The game applications have automatic saving of the current game
so you can play, quit and restart where you left off.
*They all have full undo and redo features to allow you to step
forward and backwards through a game and even use fast forward
and rewind to give rapid replays.
*Copies of games in play may be saved in sepearate files, in this way
several players could play the same setup and a tournament is possible.
All the saved games include their playing history.
*The game applications are designed with system 7.0 multiprocessing
in mind. When the player is not moving any cards around the games
use almost no cpu cycles and give maximum time to background processes.
When the user starts to play, the games take much more cpu time to give
a nice fast response.
*The shell design uses a shared resource file called 'Cards' which
contains all the bulky colour resources and sounds. This is around
350K. Each game can simultaneously share these reosurces, reducing
the disk space requirements greatly. Each game is about 70-90K.
For more details see the online help in the games ;-)
*****System requirements
They are designed to work best under system 7.0 or newer, although
they will still function with some loss of smoothness under system
6.0.7. The games use full 256 colour colour graphics, but they
have optimisations to work well under all depths from B&W to
32bit colour. However they require a mac with colour quickdraw.
At the moment this includes:
all Mac II computers (including the SE/30), all LCs, all Quadras,
Centris machines, Performas, the Classic II and the Colour Classic.
all powerbooks (except the PB100) and probably all newer macs.
They each want about 1MB of ram under system 7.0 and up to 1.5-2MB under
system 6 without 32bit Quickdraw
*****Credits
Design & programming: Ralph S Sutherland.
Testing: Neville Smythe and Kim Holburn.
Freeware, Enjoy!
Ralph S Sutherland August. 1993.
PS: The Example games folder contains some games that have worked out.
you can load them in and replay them with the rewind and fast forward
options.

ABOUT THE CARD SHELL GAMES VOLUME #2.01
Code and Artwork (c)1992 Ralph S Sutherland.

This release fixes some minor bugs, particularly occuring when
starting on a machine that doesn't have Color QD.
**********************************************************
IMPORTANT: You do not require Volume #1 to use Volume #2,
but if you already have Volume #1 then you only require
one copy of the 'cards' data file. It can be shared by
all of the Card Shell games. You can simply remove the
copy that comes with volume #1 and use the Volume #2
'cards' file for all the games. This will save about
350K of disk space. [without file compression ;-)]

Features include:

Subject: [*] HyperNotebook v1.0a2
Dear Info-Mac Administrator,
This is the first public release of HyperNotebook and Reference Stack.
They are hypertext/multimedia versions of a spiral notebook and a box of
bibliographic notecards, respectively. They work together, or separately,
and provide not only standard text manipulation and selectable key-field
card sorting, but also button-driven PICT and QuickTime viewing, embedded
pop-up notes, and much more.
This is just the first 'alpha' version. There are several features which
have not yet been added, but the current version works reasonably well.
This is public domain software. It uses several of Frederic Rinaldi's
wonderful XCMD's and XFCN's. (Thank you Mr. Rinaldi.) Per Mr. Rinaldi's
licensing requirements, this software is not licensed for commercial
distribution, but it may be freely distributed in the public domain on a
not-for-profit basis.
Please send any comments, suggestions or bug reports to me directly via
e-mail. My e-mail address on Internet is: bsanders@ncsa.uiuc.edu.
I hope you find this software useful.

Hello, all.
I am the author of NCSA Telnet 2.6. It has _not_ been released. It hasn't
even been finished yet. This is some beta version that was _not_ supposed to
be uploaded to any major Mac archives.
Telnet 2.6 will be released soon, although now it will take longer as I have
to wade through entirely too much mail due to the wrong people using a beta

What irks me the most is that the uploading user put his name on the README

PowerNotesT 2.0 is a major rewrite/upgrade to PowerNotes 1.0, including
several bug fixes, speedier algorithms, and implementation of new features
such as Password Protection and the option to attach graphic images to your
notes!
PowerNotesT is a Hypercard stack designed to be an electronic notebook for
students and researchers alike. Designed for use on a Powerbook (although
it will run on any Mac with a screen size of 640 x 400 or larger), it
organizes and stores information (ie, class notes, research notes,
diagrams, recipes, whatever), which can be textual or graphical in nature.
PowerNotesT has import and export functions for exchanging data with
others; the exported files are browsable on their own or may be imported
into another PowerNotesT stack. This stack is exceptionally useful as an
electronic notebook for students taking notes directly onto their
PowerBooks, or for researchers and experimenters who need to keep track of
experiments, projects, or information from primary literature references.

This file contains the Pixar Showplace 2.0 RIB Plug-in Developer's Kit.
You will need Think 5.04 or later for use with this file. This will allow
you to develop RenderMan Interface Bytestream Plug-in Modules for use with
Showplace 2.0 from Pixar. Like Photoshop, Plug-ins offer users the ability to
have additional functionality added to a program by people that like to code!
We believe that this will increase the popularity of Showplace, and bring more
realistic pictures to the industry. America Online users have already
downloaded
this kit, and begun development efforts on many types of plug-ins.
The purpose of these plug-ins is to generate geometry in an otherwise
non-modeling
type of program. Showplace does not allow you to model in 3D, but rather to
import
objects that have been designed in a modeler. Now with the plug-ins you can
make your own geometry.
This kit does ship with Showplace, but if you do not have Showplace 2.0, then
you can use this to develop without it.

Enclosed please find a Quicktime movie from the classic British TV series "The
Prisoner" which starred Patrick McGoohan. I'd be grateful if you could put
this on your archive.
It is not a proper movie as I don't have the equipment to capture video, but a
series of PICTS starting with the thunderous sky through to the view Number 6
sees from his window after waking from his drugged sleep. The soundtrack is
the opening dialogue between Leo McKern (as No. 2) and No. 6 (Where am I? In
the Village etc.) with a smattering of theme music in there too. I haven't had
much time to work on it so it is a bit rough around the edges, but it still
looks quite good. It is 55 seconds long and about 900k. This will be of
particular interest for Prisoner fans. If you haven't seen The Prisoner

//I'm sorry I'm sending this version out so soon after 1.2, but I couldn't

Welcome! is an app which will speak the date and time, along with a short
greeting appropriate to same. You can choose which of the Speech Manager's
voices it will use on the next startup. It has a memory partition large enough
to run everything up to "Female Voice", and it defaults to that, if
available.
If you prefer one of the smaller voices (RoboVox, Brenda, Voltron), you can
reduce the partition down to 75K or so. To get out of the app in the middle
of a sentence, just click anywhere except the menu bar, or hit a non-modifier
key.
This is probably the last update for a while--v2.0 will store the greetings,
weekdays, etc. in resources for easy localization and modification. It's
fairly
low priority for me, since I have my game to finish up. Any comments on
Welcome! can be sent to my fiance at io92143@maine.maine.edu--I will get them

Subject: Accelerator purchase frustrations (rant)
I'm so frustrated I feel like blowing something up.
Since last June, when an unrelated economic catastrophe forced me to
wait until this fall, I've been planning on buying an accelerator for
my SE. [In the mean time, of course, the Japanese glue factory blew up
and prices have been skyrocketing since!] The original preference was
the DayStar 50 Mhz board, although I also looked at DayStar's 40 Mhz
board. But when I learned more about it, I started to think I'd rather
have the cheaper AE TransWarp 40 Mhz board with 128K static RAM cache.
- the TransWarp board comes with its own 4 slots for ordinary 30 pin
SIMMS (1, 4, or 4); DayStar's board comes with a single 72-pin slot (8
or 16 MB). The single 72 pin 16 MB chip is $16 cheaper than four 4MB
30-pin SIMMS at todays' prices--assuming it can use the cheaper
composite chips. But DayStar was awfully evasive about where I could
obtain compatible SIMMS chips, and no one else (e.g., MacWarehouse)
seems to know, either.
- Although the DayStar board can use the motherboard's memory as a RAM
disk, this is so only if the SIMMS which are there are 80 ns or faster;
I doubt seriously if any of mine are; the AE board requires a few
working SIMMS chips on the motherboard for a few limited instructions
that will still go there, but there is no speed requirement. So I could
use the chips I've already got there.
- the DayStar board requires a $150 SE adaptor [originally $45 but that
was before the glue factory burnt down]; The AE accelerator does not.
- with the static RAM cache, the AE 40 Mhz accelerator is very fast;
the DayStar running at 50 Mhz is probably somewhat faster but it has no
build-in cache;
- the DayStar board may not be able to work with System 6 without
additional software that allows System 6 to access the extra memory,
such as Maxima. AE's board ships with its own System-6 software.
- the AE TransWarp board is obtainable for $428; the DayStar board
costs $599 for 40 Mhz and $749 for 50 Mhz.
So the TransWarp board looked like the clear winner and I was in the
process of arranging for its installation (I've never had SE out of its
carapace and I'm not going to start cracking cases now!) when the
installation tech support person told me that the [AE] board I wanted
would not be ready to make use of more than 4 MB of RAM until they
finished writing software for the SE's ROMs, which would be another 3-4
weeks. How nice of someone to tell me! A call to AE confirmed this; the
software will be free to purchasers of the board, but there doesn't
seem to be any real guarantee that they'll be successful in getting it
to work. The board comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, but that's
about the same window as the likely arrival of the memory-use software.
And I guess I'd have to take the computer back in to have the
accelerator removed and returned and then wait to see if they get the
bugs out, and then RE-purchase it (for a higher price by then?) if they
do? And what about the damn SIMMS chips? There I'd be with 4 4MB SIMMS
chips, probably not the worst investment, but probably not explicitly
returnable...grr!
Or I could wait for a few more weeks. And watch the prices of chips and
boards continue to rise. And enjoy my 8 Mhz 68000 machine for awhile
longer after anticipating all that speed and power. Grr!
I tell you what I'm strongly inclined to do: buy the AE board for now,
and if the 30 day guarantee starts to run dry and I haven't received
the higher-memory software, return it-and buy the DayStar 50 Mhz board
instead. And say to hell with AE. Aw, damn them anyway, I really wanted
their board. Does anyone have sufficient experience with Applied
Engineering to be able to advise me on the likelihood of them getting
this missing piece of software out, and not leaving me in the lurch?

>"You need a new hard drive and all your data is lost."
Be warned, however, that you really should get a new hard drive, install it
and
copy all the stuff from the old one **NOW**; -
I did this with a Sony drive removed from an SE/30, it's heads were stuck and
most days it would start up OK. If it didn't, there was a little screwdriver
slot you could twist and that would get it to spin up!! Great! a free hard
drive!! :=)
It was used as an external drive on my IIcx, and contained, amongst other
things, my Info-Mac Digest archive (all of volume 11) and Easy View.
One day, the drive didn't start up, so I twiddled the screwdriver and it spun
up
(span up?, I don't know) but with a grating noise like someone was holding
their
fingernails to a revolving blackboard! Needless to say, the drive didn't work,
40Mb of data lost, including all my Info-Macs and it now is in my 'useless
drives' pile. The heads had got bent during the unsticking process and had
gouged a lump out of the disk surface, so the drive couldn't find track zero,
so
it's no good.
So, the moral is, if your hard drive starts acting funny, replace it and use
the
old one for a paperweight.
Actually, there's two morals - 2) back up your data!! (self to note)

Well, four days after contacting MicroSoft, ONE disk showed up in a
near-shoebox sized container that allows mouse-handling to work
properly. The disk is a replacement so it isn't a patch that can be sent
to the nets.
Yeah, I miss the modem games. In that regard, we've gone backwards
in the past few years. There were BUNCHES of those things for Atari 8
bits in the early 80s, and there are several NOW for the newer Atari
machines.
The typical response I get on this is, why not use ARA or a network?
Well, not everyone can afford ARA and not everyone can network across town.
The modem games have all of this built inside of the game/simulator. One
dials up within, a connection is established, and away you go. sniff!!!

Greetings,
I recently purchased a Centris 610 8/230 w/CD and have been hooking back up my
peripherals from my old IIfx system piecemeal. Last night, I hooked up my
Gravis MouseStick (the original version, not the II) and it doesn't seem to

isn't functioning quite properly. It no longer automatically switches the
mouse tracking to tablet, which many of the program sets require to work
correctly. The Mouse control panel shows tablet selected, but the tracking is
actually still set to the fastest level (my normal setting). If I click on
the
tablet radio button, THEN it switches and everything works again. The FKEY
that comes with the package doesn't perform the switch correctly either.
Did something change that broke this feature? Is there an update available
anywhere? Do I need to dig out my original material and call Gravis? Thanks

MacTcp is a commercial product. It is available from APDA, they are shipping
version 2.0 ($59.00).
You may also be able to get MacTcp bundled along with some networking
applications (Intercon's NFS share for eg.).
As far as setting it up, you will need some information like domain name,
addresss etc. Your system administrator or the service provider should be
able to give you that information. You should be able to find some more
information (advice) on mac internet connections from "Mac Internet Tour

Subject: Modems & Macs -- Carrier Detect
I understand that most modems support the feature of telling the
computer that a carrier has been detected, and when it has, that it
has a special wire to tell the mac. Specifically, pin #7 of the modem
port. Problem is that a number of macs do not have that pin specifically
supported, while others do. I wonder what practical use it would be for me
to be able to use this feature. Are there any applications that support
it's use?
Thanks for any solutions to my curiousity,

My mistake - it should have been "config.tel", not "telnet.cfg". All
versions previous to 2.6 should come with a configuration file. If not,
you can create it yourself using TeachText (or any TEXT editor), then
change to type to CONF and creator to NCSA using ResEdit.

You know- my monitor the other day wasn't really jiggling or

rapidly up and down. It may have been an earthquake, I don't know.

Sure. There is not and never has been any "demo" of SoftPC (this
is according to Insignia).
Last December, someone posted a fully-functional pirated copy of
SoftAT 2.51 to mac.archive.umich.edu. This was noticed after a
few days, and deleted.
The only way to get SoftPC is to buy it. The only SoftPC-related
files on the net are updaters.
Hope this saves you from fruitless searching.

The speech manager is located at ftp.apple.com.
The directory is:
/dts/mac/sys.soft/speech
There are three files get them all.
Also since the speech manager documents are in Apple Docviewer format. While
you are ftp.apple.com get that too. It is located at /dts/utils/
Now, if you figure out how to use all the parts let me know, I have been
waiting for someone to reply to previously posed queries on the net about
speech manager.

The Speech Manager works fine on my Mac SE, running System 7.0.0 tuned. I do
have the Sound Manager 3.0 installed, but (obviously) not QuickTime. I
haven't
tried Macintalk Pro, because I don't have 3 MB of free *disk space*, much less
RAM :-)

Subject: System 7 Tune-Up problem?
I have a IIci, 8mb with 2 monitors -- Apple 13" color and Apple 12"
monochrome (actually grayscale). I had been using a video card to
drive the color monitor and built-in video for the other; when I
switched it around, so that the color was driven from the built-in
video instead, then System 7 Tune-Up v1.1.1 starting hanging the
system during boot. The rest of my inits - nothing "hacky", mostly
commercial software like ATM, Quickeys, Suitcase, etc. - work just
fine after I disabled Tune-Up. Installing a fresh version made no
difference. Further possibly relevant info:
I have the color monitor set for the menu bar, the other monitor
to display the happy face at boot
I run without 32-bit addressing or virtual memory on
I run System 7.0.1
Any ideas, anyone? Anyone want to refresh my memory as to why I would
want to use Tune-Up, anyway?

The following is an overview of what may
cause incompatibilities on some Macs with TechTool, and how to solve that
problem on some Macs. TechTool is available at the archives and is
explicitly
designed for resetting the desktop and zapping the PRAM.
TechTool will yield a strange "Enter Enter" dialog box just before it
decides
to restart my Mac LC for resetting the Desktop. It does this ONLY when
Desktop-Reset (the extension from Symmantic which was downloaded from the
archives) was still active in my Extensions Folder.

DesktopReset is from Fifth Generation Systems, not Symantec.

Subject: Trouble installing Silverlining disk software
Hallo Net,
I have trouble installing Silverlining 5.31 software on a new 125 Mb disk.
After installation, Apple HD SC Setup won't even see the SCSI #0 id. What's
worse is that the machine won't boot after a succesfull system 7.01
installation
The Welcome to Macintosh. screen shows up as it should but after that,
a rectangle of the same size shows up on the screen without text but one of
the
black lines around the white area is switching from white to black and vv.
After these troubles I tried to install ETC disk driver software. The result
is a working machine (machine boots fine with sys 7.01) but during the
ETC installation several SCSI errors were reported. Also now the
Apple HD SC Setup program doesn't recognize the SCSI #0 id.
I feel uncomfortable having these troubles on a machine I promised I would
install for my old Professor. Why doesn't Silverlining work, why doesn't the
Apple HD SC Setup recognize the disk anymore and where do the SCSI errors
during
ETC installation come from ? BTW, the machine is a Mac II, the manufacturer of
the hard disk is presumable quantum but I am not sure (haven't opened the
case yet).
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I've got Dave mark's Book 'Learn C on the Macintosh" which I bought
about a year+half ago. It came with a shrinked version of Think C
called THIN C (as many would know probably). I used it then on Sys
6.08 and 5mb of RAM, with no problems. I now tried running it on my
same SE/30 running 7.1 and 20mb of RAM. It crashes, -if 32 bit is
on.
My Qs: 1. Can anyone who recently purchased 'Learn C on the
Macintosh' tell me what version of THIN C it ships with?
(mine is 1.0)
2. Anyone running it with 32 bit on?? - if yes, which version is
it???????
Thanks a lot for any help
Please email directly - I'll summerise to the net.
